With a model"s figure, young face, and hearty smile, there is hardly any trace of time seen on the 51-year-old Wu Jun.

She has long focused on maintaining a fit figure ever-since she went to Shenzhen alone with 100 yuan in her early twenties; In her 18 years as a housewife, she insisted on learning and obtained almost all the licenses required to engage in finance and insurance; She entered the insurance industry at the age of 42 and soon became a top MDRT member, the highest award in the insurance sector granted to individuals with outstanding performances in this sector.

Recently, the “Tian Nan Hai Bei Jiangxia People” reporting group interviewed Wu Jun who has now become a “Hong Konger” but was raised in Jinshui Street of Jiangxia district in Wuhan.

Moving to Shenzhen with 100 Yuan to Her Name

In the early 1990s, Wu Jun graduated from Jiangxia No. 1 Middle School and then majored in accounting at Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics. In university, she got acquainted with a group of friends from Guangdong who told her about Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities that were then undergoing reform and opening up.

“At that time, I had less than 50 yuan a month for my living expenses, meanwhile my roommates, from Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, had more than 500 yuan a month.” Ms. Wu recalled that her father only earned 100 yuan a month. Thus, as a freshman in university, the dream of working in Guangdong was embedded in her.

In the summer of 1993, the 21-year-old Wu Jun gave up her government-assigned job and instead boarded a train to Shenzhen alone after leaving a simple letter for her parents, and her funds, a total of 100 yuan borrowed from her sister and classmates.

Heading towards the South, the train transited through Guangzhou and arrived in Shenzhen at 8 o’clock the next day. Before arriving in Shenzhen, Wu was very uneasy as she had only just learned on the train that she was required to apply for a border guard permit to travel to Shenzhen.

On March 12th, 1986, Guangdong Province issued the Regulations on the Management of Personnel Exchanges between Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Mainland. The provision specified that all Mainland personnel traveling between the two places should present a “Permit for Border Administration Zone of the People"s Republic of China” or a “Permit for Visiting the Restricted Area of the People"s Republic of China” (commonly known as the “Border Certificate”) indicating “Bound for Shenzhen Special Economic Zone”.

One kind-hearted traveller tipped her to simply look around upon arrival at the customs, afterwhich someone would soon approach to assist her.

“50 yuan and I can get you through customs and into Shenzhen.” someone indeed approached her. “But I only have 100 yuan with me, could I get a discount?” Wu answered. “How brave of you to come to Shenzhen with only 100 yuan!” The local man was so surprised that he only charged her 20 yuan to take her through customs. He then told her that she could first go to the talent market in Luohu District and even directed her to the destination.

“When I first arrived at Luohu, it was like I had just entered in a large city.” Strolling along the streets of Shenzhen, she was amazed by its grand view. However, she was not in the mood to enjoy the cityscape because she only had even lesser money now left in her pocket.

As Wu wandered to Luohu Jindu Building, she saw a recruitment notice for a high-end restaurant recruiting guidance waiters, with a salary of 1600 yuan a month.

During the interview, the human resource manager “eyed her” very carefully and then allowed her to stay because she was over 1.7 meters tall and a university graduate on the premise of getting rid of her glasses. So, she requested an advance pay for half a month"s salary and headed to the optical store to purchase contact lenses.

Wu Jun quickly adapted to and began to integrate into the Shenzhen life. She was able to speak simple Cantonese within three months of moving to Shenzhen, and her Cantonese proficiency was comparable to that of Shenzhen locals in less than half a year. Though mocked during her process of learning Cantonese, the cheerful Wu Jun remained unfazed. When faced with extremely offensive people, she would say, “I would like to see you try speaking Standard Mandarin.” Such a response would leave the mocker who could only speak Cantonese speechless.

Fast forward to 1994, Wu Jun had worked alone in Shenzhen for a year. During that year, she continually invested in herself, learned how to style her outfits, and attended modeling classes to learn about maintaining fitness. Undoubtedly, this was not without its challenges, “At that time, officials would often check our temporary residence permits at 12 o’clock in the middle of the night, and we would hide whenever they came.” Wu Jun said that it cost 400 yuan to apply for a temporary residence permit, which she was reluctant to apply for, hence she played “hide and seek” with local officials.

That year, she met her current husband, “My husband is from Hong Kong and quite a gentleman.” In 1996, Wu Jun married into a Hong Kong family.

Becoming the MDRT Top Member

In 2014, Wu Jun"s eldest daughter graduated from high school and was admitted to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Wu Jun began to reflect on her life. As she had obtained many licenses, she chose the insurance industry among many other choices and joined Manulife Insurance Co., Ltd., a well-known enterprise in the industry. “The insurance industry has flexible working hours that allow me to take care of my family.” Wu Jun said.

Wu Jun is very sociable and willing to share her life with others. In her insurance work, she also does the same, “I love to communicate and make friends with different people.” Wu Jun said. She never intentionally sets out to sell insurance. “People will instinctively contact you when they need you if they see how professional you are through your normal interactions with them.” Wu Jun said.

With excellent results, Wu Jun has successively won the Gold Award in the International Production Capacity, the Outstanding Salesman Gold Award in the International Dragon Award, and the MDRT Top Member successively, all in a very short period of time.

In the insurance industry, MDRT and IDA are recognized as the highest level of awards in the industry. MDRT is the premier organization for life insurance financial professionals, whose members are all salespersons with outstanding performances from the world"s leading insurance companies. The International Dragon Award represents the highest honor for the Chinese financial and insurance industry worldwide. Furthermore, the International Capacity Award is set up exclusively for agents who have made outstanding achievements in the number of policies sold.

In 2018, she was appointed Regional Manager of Manulife (International) Insurance Co., Ltd. and began organizing and leading the team on her own.

In the past three years, due to objective factors, more insurance businesses were transferred online, and her teams" total workload also declined. Wu Jun decided to join social media, shooting and posting short videos online to share her workout routine, introduce tourist sites in Hong Kong etc. She now has more than 100,000 followers in total across multiple platforms.

Her aim in running public social media accounts is to draw people"s attention to insurance, thus, she occasionally shares information about insurance in her short videos. “It requires skill to shoot short videos. It should be natural without any obvious traces of advertisements.” she said. Her efforts have proved effective as several potential customers are now her followers, which has even led to one more member joining their team thanks to her short videos.

In her daily life, Wu Jun is a loving and generous person. In one public-welfare activity, she gave financial aid to two students living in poverty from Tibet Agricultural and Animal Husbandry University. She supported them with a monthly stipend until their graduation. In 2019, the two students she funded informed her of the good news that they had been admitted as civil servants after passing the test with excellent grades. Wu Jun said that this sense of achievement was comparable to winning a grand prize in in her work. Wu told the two students that she hopes they pass on this love to others. In addition, she donates 300 Hong Kong dollars every month to United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees in order to help even more people.

Wu Jun recalled with a smile: “I was quite boyish as a child.” In her childhood, when her younger brother was bullied by his kindergarten classmate, she threw a stone at his head that bruised him. In high school, she was good at mathematics. Since that time she was obsessed with Jin Yong, Gu Long and Qiong Yao"s novels, she often replaced the cover page of the novel with the book cover of the math textbook.

Wu Jun said:“ I made my own decisions every step of the way in my life.” So when she got married and gave birth to a child, she decided to devote all her time to her family and be a full-time housewife, by supporting her husband and nurturing her children.

In the 18 years from 1995 to 2013, Wu Jun enjoyed the joys of being a wife and mother. However, she did not idle time away. After taking her child to school, she followed a fitness routine to stay healthy while studying finance by herself. She obtained five licenses, including a security license (needed to engage in securities trading in Hong Kong), a real estate license, and long-term insurance license which is required in the insurance industry.

Wu Jun said that she has many licenses. In Hong Kong, acquiring the relevant license, similar to a certificate in Chinese mainland, is a necessity if one is to engage in any career. During those years, she nearly obtained all the licenses that she thought to be useful. She added:“my purpose in getting these licenses is not to be disconnected from society, but rather a means for me to return to society at any time.”
